As our discussion moved onto training issues, Mr Bussawah noted the recent implementation of an UK-based college (which was granted Premier Plus status, now known as Platinum level status by ACCA) in Mauritius. He states: ‘As such, we expect a positive contribution towards the quality of tuition for ACCA courses in Mauritius. The courses being offered are TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) approved. ACCA monitors the quality of the courses being offered by its approved tuition providers; as such we are encouraging the provision of formal tuition in Mauritius.’
Responding to my query about support to ACCA affiliates and members, Mr Bussawah talks about the approved employer programme. ‘By including the employer in our approved list, we give an indication to ACCA affiliates about the companies which can help towards the required level of experience, thus achieving membership.’
He continues: ‘ACCA privileges its members. Being an ACCA member myself, I understand our members’ expectations. We respond to their queries and current topics as quick as possible. We also organise many CPD courses, thus ensuring access to CPD units on a cost-based policy.’
Mr Bussawah was pleased to state that the ACCA Mauritius office also organises social activities for its stakeholders, too. Regular outings and social activities, walk for health programmes, football and badminton tournaments, and visits to senior citizens centres are just a few of the activities undertaken. ‘During annual budget consultations, we compile the opinions of our members, and offer them to the Government of Mauritius. A “Budget Breakfast” meeting is also organised, following the presentation of the Budget Speech. Members from the profession are invited to comment and share their views on the Budget,’ Mr Bussawah says.
Mr Bussawah outlines the level of coordination with local bodies. ‘Earlier this year, we organised two workshops with the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) and answered queries from the Mauritius Institute of Professional Accountants (MIPA) on behalf of our Members.’
I was interested in the ‘equilibrium’ in respect of the demand and supply of finance professionals in Mauritius. Mr. Bussawah states that the market will maintain a sustainable growth. ‘We are talking about a global platform. I would say that the working culture has changed; finance professionals are here, but they are on duty somewhere else in the world. It is a global trend, but I personally believe that the demand for professional accountants will be similar, if not larger, assuming the growth is sustained by the current factors. I would say that the future is bright for aspiring accountants who will be joining the market.’
I wish to thank Mr Bussawah for his kind contribution and support. I do hope that students will make good use of the facilities being by the ACCA Mauritius office, all of which are aimed to provide success.
Having achieved my ACCA membership, this will be my last blog entry. I wish to thank ACCA for giving me the opportunity to write my posts, which has been an enriching experience. I thank you, my readers, for the journey we shared together. Now, there is a world of opportunities ahead…
