A few years back, on this very date, I was busy drafting my study resolutions with the aim of developing higher order skills to obtain the pass mark. There was a need to devise new ways of studying, as the coming syllabus was getting more challenging.
One of them was subscribing to financial press publications. Soon after, I realised the immensity of professional skills which I could pool out from the various business issues covered. Business language, being the essence of the issues, provides me with an opportunity to deepen my fluency; a language which is spoken on a global basis with unique technical vocabularies.
A few days back, I was advising on a local tax issue and being up to date (thanks to my local business magazine!), and having learnt about current developments in legislations, I was in a position to perform the assignment with due care and diligence. Keeping pace of updated information in the dynamic and ever changing business environment is indeed challenging, yet crucial if the aim is to meet one's professional exigencies.
The various business issues which are being examined, are spotlighted from each stakeholder's stance. Moreover, an independent analysis is made, and appropriate recommendations will lead to conclusions in the articles, all of which are covered by an expert in the specific area. Through regular reading, these real life ‘scenarios’ have provided me with essential tools in tackling the scenario-based questions. Moreover, keeping up to date with current developments has been helpful in substantiating my answers. Theories and business models that were from the textbooks were screened in a more practical manner and their relevance in bringing answers to new perplexities in the business world were assessed.
Being an ACCA student, besides broadening your technical capability, you are in the phase of building your ‘professional personality’. Determining how you will affect your career onwards, it will give you the need to move forward with resolutions that will pave a framework which will be full of prospects and rewarding aspirations!
Dear Rabiatu,
Thank you for your post. You will note that the home page of the ACCA's website contains a tremendous architecture of updated technical issues in respect of the business world we are all evolving.
The Economist and the Financial Times are among my favourites. In order to be proficient with local issues, the Government Gazette of Mauritius is indeed an efficient medium.
Thank you,
Mohammad Huzaifa
